The Problem

In 2017 in Nigeria, 43% of girls were married off before the age of 18. 17% are married before they turn 15. Nigeria is the 11th highest nation in the world for the number of child marriages.

With child marriage, school dropout and gender-based violence on the rise in underserved communities in Benue, Nigeria, girls of school age like – insert name suffer the possibility of dropping out of school due to lack of proper sensitization and communication barriers hindering the implementation of interventions to increase educational access for girls and curb child marriage.

Oftentimes, child brides suffer extreme sexual abuse, child labour, and childbirth complications leading to death in some cases.

Also, most children and adults altogether cannot read and write which hampers development in rural communities and increase inequalities which affects more women and girls.

International organisations have invested so much into creating impact in communities but much has not been done due to communication and language barriers as most stakeholders in communities neither understand English nor the delivery methods and so they are unable to engage effectively with the projects and own them.

Our Approach

Ivy is an art-based project using illustrative storytelling and cultural dialogue to break language and communication barriers hindering effective implementation of interventions in rural communities with a campaign against child marriage and school dropouts.

Our 69-page IVY illustration book publication captures the tale of a 16-year-old girl who is forced out of school and traded into marriage. The tale explores child marriage, childbirth complications, sexual abuse, school dropout and the struggle for education.

The book has been adapted into a short film which was selected and screened at the In short International Film Festival, 2018.

The book and film, along with a detailed curriculum guide serve as a resource material for advocating for increased access to education for girls and campaign against child marriage.

IVY is an African Union Education Innovation Finalist for 2019, the award was held in Gaborone, Botswana.
